README for fixdisks Applies to UltraBookIIi and VoyagerIIi DOES NOT APPLY TO ULTRABOOK1 This directory contains all you need to expand your new disk(s) to their full capacity and then allocate the additional space to a file system so it will be available to your Solaris 2.5.1 or Solaris 2.6 system. Contents: This directory contains: README - this file Solaris 2.5.1 - directory with Sun and Tadpole-RDI patches and install_all script for Solaris 2.5.1 Solaris 2.6 - directory with Sun and Tadpole-RDI patches and install_all script for Solaris 2.6 Be sure you cd to the appropriate directory. There will be two sub-directories and one plain file in each directory. One directory contains a Sun patch; the other contains a Tadpole-RDI patch. We recommend that you runt the install_all script. It will install both patches and then prompt you to reboot to single user mode and execute "fixIDEsizes", a script extracted from the Tadpole-RDI patch. FixIDEsizes "grows" your disk(s) to their full size and then prompts for information to assign the space and make it available to the system. You can either expand the last file system to the end of the disk or assign the space to an unused partition as either a file system or a raw partition. It is possible to do all of this manually. We caution that you should be very confident of your knowledge of UNIX before attempting this manually. However if you determine that you need to do it that way here's what you need to do: 1. Cd to the appropriate sub directory for 2.5.1 or 2.6. 2. Cd to the directory containing the Sun patch. NOTE: the Tadpole-RDI patch directory name begins with "T". 3. Install the patch with: ./installpatch . # note: there are two dots (.) in the command. During the installation, take all the defaults offered and answer "y" or "yes" to all yes/no questions. Ignore comments about installpatch being dropped in a future release of Solaris. These patches will never be used in a version of Solaris that doesn't support installpatch. 4. Cd up one directory and back down into the Tadpole-RDI patch directory. 5. Install the patch with: ./installpatch . # Same rules as #3. 6. Read the "Special Install Instructions:" in the README file in the Tadpole- RDI patch sub-directory. It gives you instruction for executing the "growhard" script to expand the disk(s) to their maximum capacity. It also gives basic instructions on using format and ufs specific mkfs to allocate the space to a partition of the disk and to expand the last partition to the end of the disk if that's what you choose. To re-iterate, we strongly recommend that you use the fixIDEsizes script to grow your disk(s) and allocate the added space. If you are not sure what you want to do with the added space, choose the second option and assign the space to an unused partition. Then you can come back later and use format, ufsdump and ufsrestore and whatever other tools you deem necessary to re-arrange and allocate the entire disk.
