Make sure you are familiar with the system hardware, including your compact disc drive. The Optical Disc Drive Owner's Manual for each type of drive contains instructions for using the disc drive. 2 CD-ROM Contents The OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 CD-ROM contains the following: o OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 standalone BACKUP o OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 save sets o DECamds Version 6.1 save set o Monitoring Performance History (MPH) save set o OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 documentation in Bookreader and ASCII text formats o OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 Software Product Description (SPD) For a complete list of the OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 kit contents, see the Cover Letter for OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1. 3 Handling the CD-ROM The OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 CD-ROM accompanying this guide is enclosed in an antistatic envelope. For information about inserting the CD-ROM in the disc drive, see the Optical Disc Drive Owner's Manual for your disc drive. 1 4 Installing or Upgrading To determine whether you are installing or upgrading the OpenVMS VAX operating system, read the following sections and refer to the appropriate documentation. 4.1 Installing the OpenVMS VAX Operating System from the CD-ROM Install the OpenVMS operating system if your system meets one of the following conditions: o Your VAX computer is new (or has never had any version of the OpenVMS VAX operating system running on it, including factory installed software). o Your VAX computer is running a version of the OpenVMS VAX operating system, and you want to overwrite the contents of the system disk (the OpenVMS VAX operating system, application software, and user files). o Your system is running the OpenVMS VAX operating system, but you are not able to upgrade to OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1. For example, if you changed the names of system directories on the system disk, the upgrade procedure will not work correctly. You can either restore the system disk to its original directory structure or you can reinstall the OpenVMS VAX operating system. _______________________ Caution _______________________ The installation procedure initializes the system disk, overwriting its contents. For this reason, use the installation procedure only on new VAX computers or if you want to destroy the contents of the system disk. ______________________________________________________ See the OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 Upgrade and Installation Manual for detailed information on installing Version 6.1 of the OpenVMS VAX operating system. 2 4.2 Upgrading the OpenVMS VAX Operating System from the CD-ROM Upgrade if you want to obtain a later version of the operating system. Unlike the installation procedure, the upgrade procedure does not initialize the system disk. You can obtain the latest version of the operating system while keeping your user files and layered product software intact. For more information about layered products, see the OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 Release Notes Addendum. To upgrade to OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1, your system must be running OpenVMS VAX Version V5.5-2 or higher. You can upgrade to OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 directly from either of the following OpenVMS versions: Version V5.5-2 Version V5.5-2H4 Version 6.0 You cannot upgrade to OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 from a VMS Version A5.5-2 system. To convert an OpenVMS Version A5.5- 2 system to a Version V5.5-2 system, see the OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 Upgrade and Installation Manual. _______________________ Caution _______________________ The upgrade procedure will not perform correctly if you have changed the names of system directories on your system disk. Restore your system disk to a standard directory structure before attempting an upgrade. Refer to the installation and upgrade supplement for your VAX computer for information about restoring the system disk. ______________________________________________________ To upgrade to Version 6.1 of the OpenVMS VAX operating system, refer to the upgrade procedure in the OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 Upgrade and Installation Manual. 3 5 Accessing the Documentation The OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 CD-ROM contains OpenVMS documentation in the following formats: o Files with the file type .PS are PostScript files that can be printed on a PostScript printer. o Files with the file type .TXT are ASCII text files that can be printed or viewed on a character cell terminal o Files with the file type .DECW$BOOK are in Bookreader format. If you have DECwindows Motif software installed, you can read these manuals using Bookreader. For more information on using Bookreader, see Section 6 of this guide and refer to the DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS Applications Guide. The .PS and .TXT documentation for OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 is stored in the directory [DOCUMENTATION.V061]. Table 1 lists the contents of this directory by document and file name. During installation or upgrade, the DECwindows Motif software automatically creates a library directory for Bookreader on your system disk and defines the logical name DECW$BOOK to refer to this directory. When you start Bookreader, it looks for the library file in the directory defined by DECW$BOOK. To read the Bookreader files on the OpenVMS VAX Version 6.1 CD-ROM, use the following procedure: 1. Use the following DCL command format: DEFINE DECW$BOOK device-name:[DOCUMENTATION.V061.DECW$BOOK] where: device-name is the name of the drive on which you have placed your OpenVMS VAX CD-ROM. For example: $ DEFINE DECW$BOOK DKB700:[DOCUMENTATION.V061.DECW$BOOK] 10 2. Define the DECW$BOOKSHELF logical to point to the appropriate LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF. Use the following command format to define DECW$BOOKSHELF: DEFINE DECW$BOOKSHELF device-name:[DOCUMENTATION.V061.DECW$BOOK] - LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF where: device-name is the name of the drive on which you have placed your OpenVMS VAX CD-ROM. For example: $ DEFINE DECW$BOOKSHELF DKB700:[DOCUMENTATION.V061.DECW$BOOK] - _$ LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF (You can also copy the .DECW$BOOK files from the CD- ROM to another location on your system. Always remember to define the DECW$BOOK and the DECW$BOOKSHELF logical names to point to the location of the files you want to read.) 3. Start Bookreader by choosing Bookreader from the Session Manager Applications window. You can also start Bookreader with the following command: $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:DECW$BOOKREADER For more information, see the DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS Applications Guide. ________________________ Note ________________________ If you want to provide system-wide definitions for the DECW$BOOK and the DECW$BOOKSHELF logical names (that is, for systems other than your own), you need the SYSNAM privilege. ______________________________________________________ 11
